Pre-emergent weed control

Pre-Emergent – What is it?

If you have ever used a lawn spray company, odds are you are looking to get a weed-free and green lawn. What you may not know, is how companies like ours are able to prevent so many weeds from ever emerging in your lawn. The answer is simple; pre-emergent.

What Does Pre-Emergent Weed Control Do?

Pre-emergent weed control is designed to prevent a variety of weeds before they appear. This is achieved by applying a protective layer of pre-emergent herbicide to your lawn, preventing the weeds from penetrating the soil barrier. If the pre-emerge is not applied prior to germination, it is not effective.

This means the pre-emerge MUST be applied before weeds have the opportunity to germinate. For example, since we are in the mid-south, our spring pre-emerge is applied in a split application; once January – February and again March – Mid-April. This ensures it gets in the ground prior to the weeds’ germination.

Can Pre-Emergent Harm My Lawn or My Pets?

Pre-emergent weed control is not harmful to your lawn. If you plan to plant new seeds for ornamental plants, or new grass seed to your lawn, treatment should not be applied to those areas prior to germination. For pets, we ask that they remain off the lawn for about 2 hours after the application. After the 2 hours is up, your pets can return to the lawn as normal. This 2 hour time frame gives the pre-emerge time to dry on the lawn, rendering it harmless to your 4 legged friend!

How Long Does Pre-Emerge Last?

Pre-emergent herbicide applications will not last through consecutive seasons. This is why it is necessary to apply them twice each year, spring and fall, to get the weed control you want for your lawn.
